Waste management company Sita UK teamed with services supplier Sembcorp UK and the new Wilton plant forms part of Sita Semcorps’ waste management PFI contract with Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA).

The multi-million pound energy from waste facility at Wilton on Teesside started operating in 2016 and diverts more than 90% of Merseyside and Halton’s residual waste away from landfill. Reducing CO2 production by 127,000 tonnes annually, the facility has been designed and built in line with the appropriate codes and standards, and complies with the relevant environmental standards and relevant legislation.

As well as efficiently processing around 400,000 tonnes of non-hazardous residual household and commercial waste each year, the 49-megawatt facility will create enough green electricity to power 63,000 homes.

The challenge

As local authorities seek to find environmentally friendly alternatives to landfill, more and more energy recovery facilities are being built throughout the UK.

A lot of care, thought and public consultation goes into planning and designing these facilities and the design needed to provide a sustainable, safe and affordable energy recovery solution to residual waste treatment, sympathetic to its surrounding areas and the local community.

The solution

The Wilton facility was a design, build and operate contract. The facility consists of a turbine hall, waste bunker, tipping hall, electrical room and an administration block. Tata Steel played a major role in providing the building envelope solution which was constructed using 20,000m2 of Trisobuild® built-up roof and wall systems and Trimapanel® micro-rib panels for the Administration Offices.

The facility uses innovative technology to thermally treat waste and Triosbuild® met the thermal, fire and acoustic requirements required for this build using double-sided Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel, proven and tested to meet the highest level of corrosion protection for internal environments.
