Highway Engineering Off road barriers

Off road barriers

Cost effective and flexible traffic control

Off road barrier systems offer cost effective flexible traffic control and pedestrian protection along non-highway locations. They can be supplied from stock and easily configured to suit a wide range of applications. We offer a variety of off-road safety barrier systems that provide robust protection for property and public safety.

Off-road safety barriers
With a dedicated fabrication unit on site we can manufacture a range of bespoke barrier components including off-road column protection fabricated in either an open box or corrugated configuration tailored to suit individual applications.

Tata Steel offers a variety of flexible off road barrier systems that can be easily installed to provide robust protection for property and public safety. The off road barrier system offers traffic control and pedestrian protection along alternative highway locations such as:

  • Multi-storey and surface car parks
  • Tunnel and bridge approaches
  • Embankments
  • Industrial locations
  • Protecting buildings, plant machinery and stock from vehicles movements
  • Perimeter roads
  • Race tracks
  • Educational establishments
  • Footpaths

These systems are suitable for low impact, low speed applications and must not be used on the highway.

Our off road barrier systems are defined around a range of standard components that provide a cost-effective solution for the majority of applications. This also means that they can be supplied from stock in response to your project requirements. Typical components utilised include:

Corrugated Beam
Our corrugated beam is available in three standard lengths, and can also be supplied curved in both concave and convex form. The corrugated beam that forms the basis of the off road system, is sometimes generically referred to as Armco. This design has previously been used for several decades for on-highway applications, giving an indication of the level of protection it can provide.

Open Box Beam
An alternative design, sometimes chosen on basis of appearance, is the Open Box Beam. It is stiffer than a standard ‘Armco’ corrugated beam and so might also be chosen in areas where light impacts are anticipated more frequently such as car parks. A range of complementary components for the Open Box Beam are also available.

Posts
A selection of post are available to cover different installation and ground conditions. Post designs are either ‘Z’ profile for lighter systems  or universal beam (RSJ) profile for heavier systems, and are supplied either to ‘cast-in’ to the ground or with a mounting plate for surface mounting to an existing surface by way of anchor bolts.

Corners
Both internal and external corners are available, in both 90 degree and 45/135 degree designs, that complement the corrugated beam profile and allow systems to flow around obstacles and pathways.

Ends / Terminals
A run of system is best completed by the addition of an end or terminal, either as a standard ‘fishtail’ or pedestrian ‘bullnose’ terminal. These fix directly to the end of the corrugated beam and provide a neat and effective ending to your barrier. These can be supplied from stock in galvanised finish or uncoated if necessary.

Accessories
A range of accessories can be provided to finish your system if required.

Tata Steel can offer a range of bespoke off road column protection solutions. A fabricated beam in either open box or corrugated configuration can be tailored to suit your individual application. Each beam can be fixed to surface mount or excavated Universal Beam posts in single or double height format. Assemblies can be supplied galvanised, uncoated or even painted to customer specifications.

We are always being asked to quote for motor sport applications and with this in mind we can supply corrugated beam safety barrier systems for installation on race tracks. We can supply triple height safety barrier systems that use the 120x55 Tapered Flange Channel as the support post. All additional fixings, support pieces can also be supplied to customer requirements.

Alternatively if single or double height safety barrier systems are required for access roads that are outside the tack areas then we can also supply systems to suit.

Additionally:

  • All Components can be galvanised to BS EN 1461.
  • All fasteners can be supplied to meet or exceed Grade 8.8 to BS EN ISO 898-1.
  • All corrugated beams can be manufactured using steel grade S275 to BS EN 10025.
  • All Tapered Flange Channels can be supplied to BS 4-1.

The combination of our extensive experience, design capability and broad product offering allow us to develop bespoke solutions for specific customer projects. An example of this is the use of our barrier system to create a curved enclosure and noise barrier, to screen the scrap handling system at an automotive factory. As our barrier beams are roll formed, rather than pressed, we were able to amend the standard product specification and also accurately curve the beams. We supplied more than 70 individual beams, that when site-assembled created a robust and effective barrier to transport and noise. If you have a particularly challenging project, please contact us for further discussion.
