Target Zero
Target Zero is a free online resource, funded by Tata Steel and the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA), offering guidance to anyone in the construction industry who would like to know more about the design and construction of sustainable, low and zero carbon buildings. With such a huge issue it can be difficult to know where to start, so this resource is designed to focus attention in the right areas.
The work was undertaken by a consortium of leading organisations in the field of sustainable construction including AECOM and Cyril Sweett with steel construction expertise provided by Tata Steel RD&T and the Steel Construction Institute (SCI).
Three specific, priority areas of sustainable construction were investigated:
Embodied energy (the carbon footprint when you build something);
Operational energy (where the big carbon emissions are) and how to reduce it;
BREEAM (Building Research Establishment and Environmental Assessment Model) the industry standard for measuring sustainability of a building.
Reports are available for each of the buildings investigated outlining the issues relevant to each building type, how the highest three ratings in BREEAM can be achieved and at what cost.
