Sustainable steel construction
The steel sector – comprising Tata Steel, the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA), and the Steel Construction Institute (SCI) – is delighted to be leading the way in developing a more sustainable construction industry for the UK.
Our commitments range from producing design guidance on creating steel buildings that meet the Government’s zero carbon objectives to supporting what is often known as a ‘triple bottom line’, comprising environmental, social and economic factors.

Sustainabilty FAQs
There are many questions that arise when discussing steel and sustainability. Here is a summary of answers to the most frequent questions that we get asked by specifiers.

The carbon footprint of steel
To accurately establish the environmental impact of steel manufacture, the World Steel Association (worldsteel) uses the ‘system expansion’ method of life-cycle assessment.

Thermal mass: exposing the myth
Thermal mass is the ability of the fabric of a building to absorb excess heat and as such it can reduce cooling loads and, in some cases, remove the requirement to provide air conditioning entirely and its associated energy consumption.

Sustainability Case Studies
Steels sustainability has been documented in the following building case studies. Each has a profile of the building along with the reasons as to the benefits of steel and its sustainability credentials.
Life Cycle Assessment - The Whole Story: From Cradle to Grave
The Whole Story: From Cradle to Grave was commissioned by Tata Steel and the BCSA and will broaden the ongoing sustainability debate and help engineers and designers to think about the longer-term implication of their choices.
