Connections in structural steel
Cast iron in moulds
Cast iron components were manufactured by casting the molten metal in sand moulds that allowed fairly complex shapes to be produced.
Dowels rivets and bolts
Rivets and bolts transmit load by a combination of bearing pressure, shear and friction on the interface between the components being joined.
Introduction
This section looks at the development of jointing, beginning with Ironbridge, progressing through the 19th century, and coming up to the present day, when steel is one of the most potent contemporary architectural symbols.
Materials
The ferrous metals (cast iron, wrought iron and steel) are of different chemical composition and have different physical properties.
Welding
Welding is a process in which metal components are fused together by the application of pressure or heat.
Wrought iron
As far as jointing is concerned, the major difference between cast and wrought iron lay in the method of production. Whereas each sand mould for cast iron made a piece that was tailor made for its purpose, wrought iron sections were mass produced by rolling.
