Atria
Ancillary components
Ancillary structures in atria, such as stairs and galleries, are often constructed in bare steel.
Introduction
Atrium structures, which provide enclosed spaces between building blocks, invariably use steel framing.
The relative position of glass and structure
In most atria the glass forms the external skin, conventionally supported on the structure immediately below. The structure is therefore fully exposed to internal view. However, alternative arrangements are possible, either placing the structure external to the glass, or concealing it behind a laylight.
Roof forms
There is a wide range of different roof forms including level (planar, saw-tooth, space frame), sloping forms, linear vaults (folded and arched forms), rotational forms (pyramids, lanterns and dormers), and complex forms (Vierendeel frames).
Wallforms
Wall glazing is suitable for tall buildings and tropical climes; a variety of forms can be used.
