Cassette panels

Cassette panels are formed by either brake pressing or folding flat metal sheets.

5.315Panels tend to be rectangular in shape with formed edges on both sides.

The term cassette describes a wide range of panel types, from simple panels folded from flat sheet, forming a component of a multi-layer wall to pressed and stamped panels through to pre-fabricated custom designed panels which incorporate insulation, internal lining and integral gaskets and seals. They are generally only used in walls.

The French engineer, Jean Prouve pioneered the use of panels in the cladding of Roland Garros Aero Club and many of his ideas have become established practice today.

One of the simplest forms of panels is formed from flat sheet. The edges may be formed by folding and welding the corners together. The stiffness of the panel depends on the material used and the size of the panels. It is sometimes necessary to add additional stiffness to the panel by welding or bonding additional angles rails to the back of the panel.

The size of panels depends on a variety of factors.

The size of panels depends on a variety of factor, the size of available sheet, manufacturing limitations and handling requirements. In low pitch roofs the roll formed panels may be longer than indicated in the figure but particular handling is critical is this case.
