A variety of aesthetically pleasing and economic solutions can be achieved by the use of structural hollow sections in bridges.
Hot finished structural hollow sections (SHS) have been used in both the superstructure and substructures of a range of bridges, from simple footbridges to landmark structures such as Merchants bridge and the Lowry Centre lift-bridge. The lightness of SHS, its torsional rigidity, and clean appearance are particularly suited to vierendeel and warren truss footbridges, with typical spans of 10m to 40m. The trusses are normally used as through or half through girders to minimise the effective construction depth, and the length of approach ramps or stairs. Such footbridges are usually erected complete as single units with lightweight surfacing, which minimises traffic disruption, and avoids the problems associated with site connections. Larger SHS have been used as columns, or bridge piers, and may be filled with concrete for enhanced stiffness and strength.
These types of structures efficiently use hollow sections, and present a smooth exterior finish without hazard to users or crevices to trap water and cause corrosion problems.Advantages of Tubular Members in Bridges
Advantages
General
- Clean appearance
- Torsional rigidity
- Efficient as strut or beam without instability
Rolled Hollow Sections
- Reduced maintenance if sealed
Fabricated Tubular sections
- Internal maintenance less than for external surfaces
Product Range
Tata Steel manufacture Celsius Hot Finished Structural Hollow Sections in accordance with the technical delivery requirements of EN 10210-1: 2006, and the dimensions and tolerances of EN 10210-2:2006. In general, structural hollow sections can be supplied in lengths up to 14.5m, and in the range of sizes illustrated in the table below. However, detailed advice should be sought to confirm available lengths, once the section size is known.
