Sections

Hot rolled sections can form the main structural elements of smaller multi-beam and truss bridges. On larger bridges they are commonly used for secondary steelwork; diaphragms, bracing and cross girders.

Hot rolled universal beams can be used for simply supported highway bridge spans up to 25m, and 33m for continuous spans. Longer spans are possible if loading is light such as in a footbridge, provided vibration criteria are checked. Rolled sections are ideal where beams are to be of constant depth and they generally require less stiffeners than with fabricated girders. Rolled sections can be cambered and/or curved in plan where needed.

Rolled sections are also used in truss bridges using compound sections for heavily loaded members. Trusses are often suitable for footbridges and demountable bridges (such as Bailey bridges). Through or half through truss bridges have particular advantages in flat terrain, as the construction depth is minimised, dictated only by the depth of the cross girders spanning between the trusses.

Channels, angles and other rolled sections are used extensively as secondary steelwork in a range of bridge types. Typical applications include transverse diaphragms, bracing systems, and cross girders. They also find use as stiffeners for plated construction, and for temporary works and falsework.

Product Range

Tata Steel have the capability to manufacture sections to British, European and international standards, and have an annual capacity of two million tonnes. Sections are available in non-alloy structural steel to EN 10025-2 and are supplied in the as rolled condition. In general, sections can be supplied in lengths up to 27.5m, but longer lengths may be rolled by agreement. The main section types and range of sizes are as follows:

Minimum Size mm x mm x Kg/m  Maximum Size  mm x mm x   Kg/m Dims and Properties to:

Grades

Steels of 355N/mm2 yield strength are predominantly used in bridgeworks applications in the UK because the cost to strength ratio is favourable. However, steels of 235N/mm2 and 275N/mm2 yield strengths are available if required. Sections of higher grades such as S420 and S460 can be manufactured, but are unlikely to be feasible in economic terms unless sufficient quantities are required.

Additional Services

Tata Steel also have the facilities to offer the following services:
