Corus brings learning into the 21st century for Bangor students
22 Jun 2009
Corus Panels and Profiles, part of the leading metal producer Corus, supplied 2500 m2 of Trisomet 333® – its innovative new steel roofing system - to deliver a £4million state-of-the-art school in Eithinog, Bangor.
Bringing secondary education into the 21st century, the new Ysgol Cae Top School in Bangor is a prime example of how a new generation of school buildings are being designed. Replacing the original Ysgol Cae Top Primary School which dates back to 1871, the new development provides pupils and staff with seven new classrooms including modern special educational facilities, an IT suite, libraries, music room, playground, studio nursery, community club room and a purpose built car park.
Steve Lester, Managing Director, Lester Fabrications comments: “Key to the successful delivery of this project was ensuring we built the school quickly and efficiently. Manufactured in factory-controlled conditions, Trisomet 333 is a robust, made to measure roofing and wall system that brought significant cost and time savings to the overall project. The insulated roof and wall panel system comprises straightforward side lapping detail allowing for faster installation which enabled us to install the roof in 50 per cent less time than alternative roof solutions – essential when working on education establishments from a health and safety perspective when you consider the volumes of pupils and staff that are on the site. ”
The school is located in an area of ecological importance making it vital that the finished building was sensitive to its surrounding environment both in terms of performance and aesthetics. Specific care and consideration was therefore taken when it came to both the building design and the specification of construction materials used in the building envelope. Specifying Trisomet 333 System for the roof – in Corus Colorcoat Verso® Merlin Grey – gave the school a contemporary feel whilst enabling the building to blend with the skyline to ensure it did not intrude on the landscape.
The system also offers excellent environmental and sustainability benefits through eliminating the risk interstitial condensation, ensuring uniform thermal performance throughout the building envelope.
Mark Clemson, Commercial Director – Building Envelope, Corus Panels and Profiles comments: “Trisomet 333 performs to the highest standards of thermal performance and air-tightness as a result of its auto-hesively bonded polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation core using the latest foam technology. Delivering the highest standards of energy efficiency to ensure optimum building performance, which brings with it associated economic benefits, the fact that Trisomet 333 can be fully recycled once the building reaches the end of its useful lifespan makes this one of the most sustainable building envelope systems available on the market.”
Clients and insurers can be reassured by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) Grade A awarded to the Trisomet 333 System. The system has the added benefits associated with the Platinum Systems Warranty, exclusively from Corus Panels and Profiles. The warranty covers all the building envelope solutions provided by Corus Panels and Profiles – making it the most comprehensive system warranty offered on the market.
