New ultra shallow foundation bollard system introduced
07 Dec 2010
A new ultra shallow foundation bollard system, that has a structural depth of only 75mm (3”), has been introduced by Tata Steel (formerly Corus). The Company claims this is the shallowest PAS 68-tested foundation bollard system available anywhere in the world.
The new Tata Steel Ultra Shallow Foundation (USF) bollard system is designed to provide a high level of protection from hostile vehicle attack. The prime purpose of the new shallow design is to avoid re-routing local underground utilities, which may need to be disturbed if deeper foundations are used. This shallow foundation means that excavation time is reduced and local disruption minimised. Speed of installation of the system is one of its main benefits - up to 20 bollards per hour can be installed (dependent on ground conditions) making the system highly cost effective.
The product has been tested to PAS 68: 2010 standards, which in this case involved the system stopping a 7500 kgs truck impacting at 90 degrees at speeds of 64 kph and 80 kph.
The unique shallow foundation capability has been achieved by designing the base plate and the connection arrangement in such a way as to ensure maximum integrity of the system without the need for deeper foundations. The design also means that the system can be quickly installed with the minimum of preparation in locations where ground conditions are uneven - the connectors enable the base plates to adapt to different gradients to ensure that the bollards are easily installed and aligned correctly. In addition, the design of the connectors means that, should the need arise, individual bollard assemblies can be removed and replaced without the need to cut and repair reinforcement that is common to other bollard foundation systems.
Several bollard profiles and styles are available to suit differing client aesthetic requirements.
The Tata Steel USF bollard system is suitable for protecting from vehicle attack at a range of different locations. These include high profile sites where people gather together in numbers - shopping centres, sports stadia, airports and railway stations, large office developments and key public buildings. The system can be purchased separately for a stand-alone installation or can be specified as part of a larger scheme involving several elements of a complete site security plan.
The USF bollard system from Tata Steel is the latest addition to the Company’s bollard system product line. This comprises several models in different styles and with different foundation arrangements, all of which are PAS 68 rated. A top-of-the-range high performance bollard system that delivers zero penetration from a 7500 kgs truck impacting at 90 degrees, and at up to 80 kph, is also available.
In addition to fixed bollard systems Tata Steel also offers a range of PAS 68 rated surface mounted barriers and walls for temporary use at large events such as major sports fixtures, state visits, party political conferences, etc or where the layout of a security-sensitive site entrance may need to change and flexibility of configuration is required. The Company also offers several additional services such as security site surveys, vehicle dynamic assessment, system design and full installation and on-site services.
*PAS 68 - specification for vehicle security barriers
This Publicly Available Specification (PAS) has been prepared to address the needs of organisations who wish to have assurance that vehicle security barriers will provide the level of impact resistance that they seek. The full PAS classification covers the mass, speed, angle and resulting penetration and dispersion values of an impact test relating to the specified product.
