New Bi-Steel security portal enables easy access for pedestrians

27 Jan 2009

A new heavy-duty pedestrian portal has been developed by Corus Bi-Steel, which facilitates quick, easy and uninterrupted access by the public through the Company’s blast and impact resistant anti-attack vehicle barriers.

The portal has been designed to enable access, whilst maintaining the effectiveness of the system - to provide robust protection against vehicle borne improvised explosive attack (VBIED).

The portal has been tested in accordance with PAS 68:2007, the accepted UK classification system for vehicle security barriers and their supporting foundations when subject to horizontal impact, and meets the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005.

The portals are easy and quick to install on site - surface mounted units require no foundations - and use a simple bolted arrangement to connect to the Bi-Steel barriers. No specialist skills or equipment are required to assemble the barrier system onsite, and all elements, including the portals, can be easily disassembled and moved to another location, or into a storage area for future use. The portals are painted with a premium finish and can be supplied in the customer’s corporate colours, even incorporating company logos. In addition, CCTV cameras, lights or sensing equipment can be easily mounted onto the units.

Added impetus for the development of the Bi-Steel pedestrian portal came as a result of the Government’s National Security Strategy published in November 2008, which called for increased vigilance against potential terrorist bomb attacks on crowded places such as shopping centres, sports arenas, visitor attractions, airports and rail stations. Other potential targets requiring temporary protection measures could include state visits, major music festivals and exhibition centres hosting events of a sensitive nature, such as those showcasing military equipment.

Bi-Steel anti-attack vehicle barriers are currently in use protecting security sensitive sites across the UK, including major airports, key government locations and military bases.
